Current City of Lincoln Emergency Information Lincoln Fire Chief Dave Whitt has announced that the propane tank that has been burning for the past 36 hours has burned out and that the propane tank is empty. Based on this information, the operation did not require the “hot tap” process, but rather involved filling the tank with foam and water to clear the tank of all vapor. Once this process is completed, the evacuation order will be lifted at midnight and residents will be able to return to their homes. Nearly 4,800 homes and businesses in Lincoln’s downtown area had been evacuated on Tuesday afternoon, and the evacuation has remained in place since that time. The American Red Cross provided support to the three evacuation shelters located at three separate City locations. Lincoln schools will be closed the remainder of this week and anticipate opening on Monday. City Hall will be open Thursday morning for normal working hours.
